This genus consists of about 125 species of deciduous and evergreen shrubs and small trees. They have smooth dark bark and simple green leaves, often with serrated edges. The flowers are borne in clusters, and are insignificant. They will produce fleshy pea-size berries. They are fully to frost hardy. Grow in sun or semi-shade with fertile soil.
