Sweet gum, Liquidambar, Satinwood, Red gum, American sweet gum.
Description
Sweet gum, Liquidambar, Satinwood, Red gum, American sweet gum.
This species is tall and pyramidal. Grow them in soil that is moist but well drained, acidic and deeply cultivated. The tree will produce round, spiny fruits which can become messy. The leaves are star-shaped with 5-7 lobes, and will produce beautiful fall colours, which are purple, yellow or red. The fruit will ripen in the fall and hang on throughout the fall and early winter. They are temperate-climate plants, requiring sun or part-shade and fertile, deep, loamy soil with adequate water during spring and summer. They will not thrive in shallow, sandy soil. The trees are best allowed to develop their lower branches to ground level.
